Big Brother
Big Brother is a fictional character and symbol in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. He is the leader (most likely a symbolic figurehead) of Oceania, a totalitarian state where the ruling Party has total power over the inhabitants.
In the society that Orwell describes, every citizen is under constant surveillance by the authorities, mainly by telescreens. The people are constantly reminded of this by the slogan "Big Brother is watching you": a maxim which is ubiquitously on display. In modern culture the term "Big Brother" has entered the lexicon as a synonym for abuse of government power, particularly in respect to civil liberties, often specifically related to mass surveillance.

Edward Snowden warns about loss of privacy
Who is Edward Snowden?
Where is he from?
Why is he famous?
Where is he now?
Listen to Edward Snowden and choose the right words.
- Recently we have learned that our telecommunication companies /governments working in concert have created a system of worldwide mass surveillance watching everything we do.
- Great Britain's George Orwell warned us of the danger/importance of this kind of information.
- Today we have sensors in our pockets/bags that track us everywhere we go.
- A child born today will never know what it means to have a public / private moment to themselves, an unrecorded, unanalysed thought.
- And that's a problem because privacy/surveillance matters, privacy/surveillance is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be.
- Together we can find a better balance, end mass surveillance and remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking/spying is always cheaper than asking/spying.
